Located on the southwestern edge of Pamplona's historic center is the sprawling complex otherwise known as La Ciudadela. The star-shaped citadel was built in the 16th century, back when Pamplona was considered a major military outpost close to the French border. Once its military function was deemed obsolete, however, La Ciudadela was converted into a leisure and culture area, combining beautiful parks and gardens with exhibition spaces and contemporary sculptures.
